Advice on a wedding proposal, how to make a ring box?
I have been with my girlfriend for a few years and i am preparing to pop the question. Now i have decided to use my grandmother's engagement ring. That being said i decided i would like to add a special personal touch. I want to build my own ring box. Now i am definitely a novice when it comes to wood work. But i feel if i create a nice simple box it would be special to have as a keepsake. So any one have thoughts? What kind of wood is best for this kind of project? Can i use basic tools? What tools are needed?
Thank you for your help
Forgive me but I'm a die hard romantic. As you admitted to novice skills in wood working I came up with a unique idea.
Get a decent size log About 2' x 8". Bore a large hole through the center of it to hollow it. Then a hole in the middle large enough for a small light socket to intersect. On the opposite side carve though a 2 hearts one left and one right. Optionally, In the center surface carve your initials in a heart and the date. Put a small light kit in the center back hole. http://www.statuaryplace.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5_18&products_id=1308&zenid=4686217ae84a4a33db4bf9f83a61c85b You can get these at any store that sells Christmas things. Or a lighting store.
When it lights you will see the 2 hearts light up on the log.
Add a note in the log.
May our love last as long as the oldest tree,
may the fire never end,
may our days be filled with Christmas forever .....
Marry me.
Put a clip behind the hearts hidden from view so when you place the ring it is in the window. When she unwraps it. Say OH! I forgot the bulb...Hang on its in my pocket. Show her the light in your pocket and take the log. Fasten the light bulb and the ring to the clip. Find a place to put your creation and say... here hun turn it on. Have her flip the switch and the ring will come to life. Then point her to the note.
Now you may need someone with a bit more experience and with big tools to help you out here for the center hollow. But it's easily done. A door hole drill bit willl make the hollow in several passes. Then you use a smaller Bit for the hearts and the light hole.
Merry Christmas. And Pre Congratulations!
