What is appropriate for mother's jewelry?

My husband and I were thinking about getting my mom a Mother's Necklace for Christmas. We've found the one we like, but before we buy, we were wondering, is it appropriate to add his birthdstone on the necklace too?
My mom only has two daughters, but we didn't know if it would be appropriate to add my husbands (her son-in-law) birthstone to the jewelry. Any suggestions?

Typically birthstone pieces for mothers are just blood children. I havent heard of inlaws being put on them but its really up to you. If your mom really likes him then why not.

White gold necklace pendants are probably the safest things you can give to anyone on any special occasion. Whether it’s a christening or a birthday or an anniversary, white gold necklace pendants can say it all without looking too store-bought or generic. In fact, it is probably anything but that. Most people choose to give this particular piece of jewelry simply because they can be very expressive in it. Your pendant choice, however, will need to be based on your relationship with the recipient.

Godchildren and infants

The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises parents and caretakers to remove such trinkets over concerns they could be tainted with heavy metals like cadmium. Writing in a blog posted today evening, the chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission noted that children who chew, suck on or swallow a bracelet charm or necklace may be endangering their health.
