Is copper body jewelry safe?

I know that copper can turn your skin green, I honestly don't care about that because I wouldn't wear it for extended amounts of time. However, my dad claimed that copper could poison your blood, but I think he is just ill-informed.
It still worries me, though, is there any sort of hazard for wearing copper plugs in my ears?
They aren't real body jewelry, by the way, they are just some pieces of piping from Home Depot. And yes, I know this isn't a safe and great idea, but I can't afford a lot of jewelry so I get a lot from hardware stores.
Please don't tell me about how the fact that I bought piping is stupid, just please tell me (based on fact) if it could hurt me or not.

Metal on your skin is different from metal in your body. A lot of costume jewelry is made with a copper or brass base and plated to appear gold or silver, of course the plating wears off and the jewelry turns you green. Through that you're absorbing low levels of toxins from the metal oxidizing/tarnishing on your skin.

In a piercing, it is a different story. The skin (fistula) isn't as "tough" as the skin that covers your body is and is more susceptable to absorbing toxins from the metal which could in turn make you sick, especially if you have a high sensitivity to certain elements in metals.

No you dad is not ill informed. If you want body jewelry, order it on line. You can get jewelry that is made from safe materials from a variety of places online at really low prices. Ebay being a great one, but make sure it is a manufacturer or authorized dealer that you are buying it from. Vanzy has good quality jewelry at low prices and they have an Ebay store. Places like Painful Pleasures.com has great prices, and so does many others. Just research the sites, research their information to see what they make their jewelry from and make a smart decision on.

Be extremely careful with metals that weren't intended to be used "internally" such as copper, brass, nickel, and several others. Also be cautious if you use PVC because it can contain materials that are carcinogenic when used within the body.
